Join lecturer Fran Ørsted Andersen from Aarhus University as he tells the remarkable story of Chris Madsen (1851-1944), a Danish-American with an extraordinary life. Born poor in rural Denmark, Madsen became one of the Wild West's greatest heroes, famous as a US Marshal known for capturing the legendary Dalton and Doolin gangs.
While Madsen's 67 years in America are well-documented through history and film, much of his early Danish period—around 25 years—remains obscure. However, Andersen has conducted extensive research and can shed new light on Madsen's childhood and youth in Funen, including his work as a drainage engineer in Odense before he emigrated and wrote his remarkable American adventure.
The lecture is based on Andersen's comprehensive research, which was also published in the book "Et liv på kanten. En biografisk fortælling om Chris Madsens utrolige liv" (2018). Following the lecture, coffee, tea and rolls will be served.
