Der Rosenkavalier is Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal's iconic opera classic – a work that like no other embodies the Viennese spirit. This production from Zurich Opera is brought to Café Biografen through Opera Kino, held monthly.
Director Lydia Steier has staged a new production inspired by Gottfried Helnwein's acclaimed scenography. Colour forms the central stylistic element: dusty blue depicts the Marschallin's world, gilded yellow symbolizes the Faninals' luxury, and wild red represents Baron Ochs' downfall.
The Story
The opera explores the development of human relationships – both intimate and social. It begins with a scandalous affair between the young Count Octavian and the older, charming Marschallin. When Octavian is to be the "Rosenkavalier" for Baron Ochs' betrothed, Sophie, the two young people meet, and a more genuine bond forms. The Marschallin must confront the melancholy of aging, while the story unfolds in a blend of comedy, intrigue, and deep emotion.
