Discover the fascinating world of quantum physics with an introduction to the fundamentals and the so-called "quantum revolution", which opens the door to entirely new technologies. The lecture will focus on how quantum computers work and what practical applications they will have.
The world of atoms and molecules operates by completely different rules than what we experience in everyday life. Quantum physics shows us that particles can exist in multiple places simultaneously, and that measurements always yield unexpected results. A revolution that challenged many physicists' worldview in the early twentieth century, but which has since been confirmed countless times with high precision.
The lecture will cover existing technologies and future prospects for groundbreaking solutions built on atoms' quantum physics properties. For decades since the 1990s, both Denmark and the world have invested heavily in developing functional quantum computers – machines that use atomic quantum states to solve complex calculations at enormous speeds. You will gain insight into where development stands today and what fully developed quantum computers can contribute to the future.
The event is an updated version of the lecture from spring 2020, streamed live from Aarhus University and part of the series "Public Lectures in Natural Science", arranged by Aarhus University in collaboration with local hosts and supported by the Carlsberg Foundation.
