Morten Sodemann, professor at the Department of Clinical Research at the University of Southern Denmark and senior consultant at the Department of Immigration Medicine at Odense University Hospital, explores the roots of social inequality in health in Denmark. He argues that social inequality is not a natural given, but rather a result of societal choices through politics, structures, prejudices and the language we reproduce daily.
Drawing on the work "The Manual of Inequality," which Sodemann created together with Kristian Larsen, the lecture illuminates both concrete and systemic barriers to health. The focus is on understanding the mechanisms behind inequality — and not least our own roles in perpetuating them. Inequality is not merely about statistics, but about real people's experiences within the healthcare system day after day.
