Love, courage and tragedy converge in this award-winning and critically acclaimed opera production, which returns to Den Fynske Opera in November 2026. The story unfolds in Verona, where two young people – Giulietta and Romeo – fall in love despite their families' inherited blood feud. The city is gripped by a brutal conflict between the Capulet and Montague families, and the young couple's secret union challenges family honour and the entire social order of the city.
When Romeo returns in disguise hoping to bring about reconciliation, while Giulietta is pressured into a politically advantageous marriage, their attempt to achieve peace sets in motion a desperate plan that no one can control. The opera tells the story of love in the shadow of inherited enmity – and the courage to break the narratives that generations have passed down. It is a powerful portrayal of hatred, hope and the choice between revenge and reconciliation, which continues to speak powerfully to our contemporary world.
Composer Nicola Vaccai's metrical opera from 1825 was his greatest success. With a libretto by Felice Romani, the work is distinctly part of the Italian bel canto tradition. At its Danish premiere at Den Fynske Opera, the production was named "Best Opera Production in the Provinces 2025" by CPH Culture. Soprano Katinka Bohse Meyer received the Lars Waage Prize for her interpretation of the title role as Giulietta.
Director and artistic director Eva-Maria Melbye's staging focuses on the power of love and the conflicts that are passed down through generations. The opera is performed in Italian with Danish supertitles.
Special Event 1 December at 6:00 PM
Before the evening's performance, a special talk takes place from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM with Denmark's peace and conflict researcher Isabel Bramsen. Drawing on Giulietta e Romeo, she discusses the courage for peace and how peace is not merely the absence of conflict but an active choice that can break the cycle of hatred. The talk is open to all with tickets to the performance that same evening.
